How to Optimize Your Event Listings on Culturalyst

Why Your Listing Matters More Than Ever
From the date of this post, more than 12k people search online for things to do in Waco every month (if you're in another city, you can find similar data using any keyword research tool). Some are looking for a concert. Others are searching for a festival, an art exhibition, a workshop, a play, or a cultural event to attend with friends and family. We want your event to be one of the experiences they discover.

That’s why Creative Waco has invested in Culturalyst and other marketing initiatives designed to connect residents and visitors with the incredible arts and cultural experiences happening throughout McLennan County.
We’re actively investing in search engine optimization, website improvements, and paid search advertising to put local arts and cultural experiences in front of more people. Culturalyst is one of the tools we’re using to make that happen.
But for these efforts to be effective, we need your help.
The more complete and accurate your event listing is, the more likely it is that the right audience will find it.
Why Complete Listings Matter

When you create an event on Culturalyst, the information you provide doesn’t just appear on the event page. It also helps search engines and AI-powered search tools understand what your event is about.
The more complete your listing, the more opportunities there are for people to discover it when searching online.
We recommend filling out every field available, including:
- Event title
- Event description
- Date and time
- Location
- Admission information
- Organizer details
- Relevant categories and tags
Detailed event information helps both people and technology understand your event, increasing the likelihood that it appears in search results when someone is looking for things to do in Waco or McLennan County.
The good news is that Creative Waco and Culturalyst have already done much of the technical work. Our platforms are structured to help search engines and AI tools interpret and display your event information effectively. All you need to do is provide complete and accurate information.
Choose Images That Show the Experience

Your event image is often the first thing people notice.
Whenever possible, use real photos from previous events. Images of actual attendees, performers, artists, or participants help potential visitors imagine themselves there.
If your event is new and you don’t have photos yet, consider using high-quality stock photography that accurately represents the experience.
The best event images:
- Show people participating
- Capture the atmosphere of the event
- Reflect the culture, creativity, or energy of the experience
- Create an emotional connection with viewers
Avoid Text-Heavy Graphics

One of the most common mistakes we see is using event flyers or graphics filled with text as the primary event image.
While these graphics may contain useful information, most of that information already exists within the event listing itself. Repeating it on the image creates visual clutter and makes it harder for viewers to focus on the experience you’re offering.
Instead of reading a flyer, people should immediately understand what attending the event feels like.
A photo of a live performance, community gathering, art workshop, cultural celebration, or exhibition will almost always be more compelling than a graphic packed with dates, times, and details.
If You Use a Logo, Add Context

Some events have established branding and recognizable logos. That’s great.
If you choose to use a logo-based graphic, we recommend surrounding the logo with imagery or design elements that communicate the event experience.
For example, a theater production might feature props, characters, or thematic visuals that hint at the story. A cultural festival could include imagery representing food, music, dance, or traditions associated with the event.
The goal is to help viewers quickly understand what makes your event unique.
These Same Principles Apply to Artist Profiles

The same recommendations apply when creating or updating your artist or organization profile on Culturalyst.
Detailed descriptions, complete information, and strong visuals help improve discoverability across both Culturalyst and Creative Waco’s websites.
Whether you’re a ceramic artist, musician, filmmaker, dancer, writer, or arts organization, complete profiles give search engines and AI tools more context about who you are and what you do.
That means more opportunities for potential audiences, collaborators, patrons, and community members to find you.
We’re Investing in You
Creative Waco has always worked to support artists and arts organizations. Today, we’re expanding that support through strategic marketing efforts designed to increase awareness of the creative and cultural experiences available throughout our community.
But these efforts are most effective when your listings are complete, accurate, and engaging. So if you have an upcoming event, add it! And if you’re an artist or organization, make sure your profile tells your story.
Together, we can showcase the incredible creativity that makes Waco and McLennan County such a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.
